KOFA Print Loan Policy and Procedure
As part of Korea's cultural heritage, KOFA's film collection has to be permanently preserved. In order to ensure its survival, extreme restrictions have to be applied to the archive's lending policy. Prints will not be loaned for commercial exhibition, private screenings, or classroom screenings.

Print loan is possible for public screenings with a purpose to produce extraordinary contributions, subject to print availability and certain terms and conditions. In order to safeguard the prints, long-term loans are not permitted and the number of screenings is generally restricted to no more than three times. Lending forms have to adhere to archive-related film lending conventions.

Those interested in borrowing prints should inform KOFA in writing by post, fax, or e-mail at least one year in advance of the desired screening date to allow reciprocal inquiry into the possibility. Print loan requests should be made at least six months in advance of the scheduled screening date. If these time limits are not observed, borrowers may not receive service in an appropriate time, even if they have secured screening permission from the copyright holder.

To borrow from KOFA's film collection, a loan service fee has to be paid according to KOFA's internal guidelines. This fee is for the preparation of prints for shipping, and the shipping charge, insurance cost, and potential copyright expenses, etc., are additional. The borrower is responsible for all shipping costs, including the return transport of the print to KOFA. A prepayment of the above charges must be made at least one month prior to the first scheduled screening date, and it is to be deposited into KOFA's designated account. Should the borrower fail to make the prepayment in time (or, if the purpose of the print use is changed or is discovered to be false) KOFA reserves the right to cancel the loan even if the borrower was first given permission by KOFA.

The borrower is responsible for inspecting prints after delivery and notifying KOFA of any damage discovered before projection. Otherwise, it will be assumed that any damage discovered after the prints have been returned is the fault of the borrower.

The borrower accepts full responsibility for the safety and security of the print from the time it is shipped until the time it is returned to KOFA. The borrower will be expected to reimburse KOFA for lost prints and any form of damage.

Prints must be returned to KOFA, prepaid and insured, immediately after the final screening date. Late returns for prints will be grounds for refusal of future loan requests.

Before contacting KOFA, borrowers should establish whether KOFA's film collection holds a print of the title they require. Using the year 1990 as the basis, any title that was produced before this date should be searched in KOFA's film database to confirm our holding. If borrowers are interested in a title produced after the year 1990, they should contact the film's producer or distributor directly for loans because it will be much easier. Information on producers or distributors for recent releases can be found at the following website: http://www.koreanfilm.or.kr

To search KOFA's film database for possible loans, please use the search engine. (Borrowers are requested to be mindful that finding a title in the database does not necessarily mean it is available for a loan. Prints may be unavailable for loan for a variety of reasons, including poor physical condition of the film or the title may be lent to another borrower.)
