¡°We collect everything under the category of moving image materials,
including movie film, video materials, image materials, and scenarios.¡±
The collection of moving image materials, one of KOFA¡¯s main projects, involves collecting domestic and foreign movie film, moving image materials, film-related documents, and sound materials, handing down our film history and culture for posterity through safe record preservation and management, and making them available as our national resources. The target materials for collection include domestic and foreign dramatic/tragic movie films, video materials, sound materials, posters, image materials such as stills, scenarios, film-related books, and film-related documents such as periodicals. The scope of collection targets is now being expanded gradually to include props used in each film and memorabilia once possessed by movie people.

Materials are collected through purchase, entrustment, donation, production (copying, restoration), submission, exchange, etc. Duties related to collecting materials are performed by collecting such materials as byproducts related to movie films, movies and/or moving images, taking over and classifying the collected materials into different categories of basic data while grasping the characteristics of collected materials as well, and transferring them for proper preservation. The following are important for the process of making decisions about materials collection from consultation until prior to takeover.

First, it is important to get as much information as possible about the person possessing the material. Most material is possessed by individuals with great affection for or attachment to the materials they possess so you need to listen to what they say, thus obtaining information about the materials or inducing a conversation with them to grasp such information on the materials as the forms, contents, transaction conditions, etc.

Second, in case of a very large amount of materials, it is important to ascertain the preservation conditions and the collection standards, such as the requirement of collecting such materials selectively. It is also necessary to check and ascertain the remuneration standards and copyrights with respect to the materials.

Our moving image materials are valuable cultural heritages we must keep for ourselves and hand down to future generations. The Korean Film Archive will continue to do its best to collect and preserve our valuable cultural heritages.
